Reproductive Rights, the Left, and Iran

My wife received a postcard-sized piece of propaganda in the mail telling her that women’s reproductive rights are under threat:

In Congress and in state legislatures, legislation is moving that threatens to strip away basic reproductive rights including abortion care and access to birth control.

There are two issues I want to talk about in connection with this. The first is that an attack on reproductive rights is exactly what happened in Iran after the revolution there. Complete access to abortion was granted to Iranian women in 1977, only to be rescinded a couple years later after the Muslims took over. (See here, p. 80.) It is for this reason, as well as other similar ones, that I have always advocated against the leftist-Islamist alliance concerning which it is impossible to reason with any liberal or leftist these days. But it should be pretty obvious that, in leftist talk, Iran hates women, even if most leftists today don’t want to admit this and see it as an ally of the left.

The second issue concerns the likelihood of shari’a being imposed on us. Liberals and leftists have always regarded this as extremely unlikely. But the reason I have thought of it as much more likely than they do is because of their own behavior. That is, if women in America lose their reproductive rights because of a push in Congress and our state legislatures by Republicans, then that will happen only after fierce resistance by liberals and leftists. If that’s the case, then it is even more likely that a push by Muslims for shari’a to be imposed on us will succeed, because it won’t be met by any resistance from liberals and leftists. Just for the record:

What did they do after Iranian women lost their reproductive rights when the Muslims took over? Nothing.

What did they do about the fatwa against Salman Rushdie? Nothing.

What did they do when the Taliban threatened to overrun Afghanistan in the mid-1990s? Nothing.

What did they do after the murder of Theo van Gogh? Nothing.

What have they done about the vilification by liberals and leftists of his colleague Ayaan Hirsi Ali? Nothing.

What have they done about threats to the lives of cartoonists? Nothing.

What have they done about the many honor killings and rapes of Western women who are inappropriately dressed in Muslim enclaves in the West? Nothing.

It’s reasonable to conclude that these people will do nothing when those Muslims who want shari’a try to ram it down our throats.
