This article in a Lebanese newspaper says that the president of France has pledged to keep Lebanon stable. It’s really long past time that this sort of thing became common. For too long European countries have criticized American “imperialism” while doing nothing themselves to make the world a better place.
Naturally, it’s an open question whether France will actually keep its pledge and whether it would commit troops if necessary beyond the 1,100 who are now there helping keep the peace at the border between Lebanon and Israel, but the words sound nice.

In a related story, a generation of schoolchildren cheered and promised to re-elect the President at their first opportunity. This includes schoolchildren in other countries, who will write him in, if they learn to write.
