In fact, it’s more than full time, or at least it seems that way. It’s dealing with my mother’s estate. I’ve had to learn more than I ever wanted to know about beneficiary IRAs and gift taxes and annuities and all manner of other things. A decade ago I set things up so that every asset my mother had was either pay-on-death or transfer-on-death or else had me as a joint owner. This, I thought, would make things go smoothly and quickly because we wouldn’t need to go through probate. Alas, while the banks have been good about simply giving me a check, they won’t send checks to my sister; she will have to come in and get it in person, and she lives several states away. As for the brokerage accounts, they all have very confusing forms to fill out, and I feel that if I make a tiny mistake, I will lose out on a small fortune.
Fortunately, in all of this my sister and I are normal people and are working in harmony.
Ha. Normal people? My wife insists we are abnormal people, and that everyone else would be screaming at their relatives. Her best friend is now estranged from her brother and his family after the death of their mother because of the strange way he was handling the estate.
Anyway, I’ve had to delve into lots of legal stuff on estates. Why, I have learned so much that I could take this woman's place. I’ve read a few articles about her, and no one has reported on how she finally got caught. Did she screw up, or did someone finally actually check out her credentials?
Incidentally, most commenters, both on this site and on other sites, are siding with her.
