Nonsense from the Left
In this editorial by Ross Douthat, one leftist commenter asserts that “neither the ‘caliph’ nor any of his minions has ever announced just what it is that they really want.” Of course they have. They want world domination. I thought this was understood. Sigh. The left just continues to ignore this elephant in the room.
The More Things Change, Etc.
While cleaning out some files, I found a news item from May 14, 1998. It reported that a bomb had been discovered in Paris and that it was believed to have been planted by, guess who? Islamic militants. Plus, the article referred to an earlier campaign by an Islamic group back in 1995. Terrorism in France has a history longer than we think. They won’t give up, until we stomp on them hard.
A Chronicle of the Chronicle
We subscribe to the Chronicle of Higher Education, but while I used to look at it at least for what Jane Austen somewhere describes as angry pleasure, it now simply irritates me. A recent issue had an essay insisting that for environmental reasons, people should be limited to having just two children. I haven’t bothered to read this, but it’s remarkable how many people on the left still accept this idea. Never mind that it wreaks havoc with social security or that it forces countries to accept immigrants they don’t want in order to support all those elderly people who will soon enough overwhelm the population. Never mind that many countries today are having a hard time maintaining their population and that the idea of two children is actually hard to achieve when you are below that figure. And never mind that a publication devoted to education should perhaps be encouraging population growth so that there will be more work for its readers (who are in the business of teaching young people).
By the way, this essay was perhaps the least offensive in that it didn’t try to persuade readers that all the disruptions happening on campuses these days should be accepted. Yes, that is what other essays were saying.
In the main part of the issue, there was an article talking about how many potential donors do not trust colleges and universities to use the money they donate the way they want them to. The article blamed the colleges, not for misusing the money and thus losing the trust of potential donors, but not educating students that they are in fact trustworthy. They then cited a study showing that colleges are trustworthy. Yup, no conflict of interest there. We’ve all heard about money donated, say, to help promote capitalism that ends up funding lesbian poetry, so this “study” was just another waste of time and money (and no doubt was funded by someone who didn’t want it used for that purpose). The joke will be on the lesbian poets when they find thirty years from now that the money they have donated will be used to discuss how the Qur’an thinks gays should be executed.
The Shooting at the Minneapolis Demonstration
For those who missed it, the other day there was a demonstration in Minneapolis by some Black Lives Matter folks, and it was disrupted by some “white supremacists” who took some shots at them. As several people snarkily observed, they then had to rely on the police to catch the shooters. Heh.
I hope I can speak for the majority of Americans in saying that I don’t care at all about the latest thug that the Black Lives Matter crowd are championing, but I do care about the nine-year-old boy who was murdered by gang members in Chicago. These are the murders that they should be focusing on.
