Reader Mark Spahn has reminded me of this essay, whose basic premise is that leftists are relativists and so when Muslims are found to be sexist or homophobic, the left refuses to judge and says “it’s their culture.” (The author, John Hawkins, calls this “indiscriminateness,” but I prefer different words). And there is something to this, for leftists do sometimes talk about moral relativism, but not all leftists talk this way. In fact, what is remarkable about our era is not that some leftists are unwilling to judge Muslims, but that all leftists are unwilling to do so. Where are all the uncompromising feminists I knew when I was young? What do young women think of this? I still tend to think that some day feminists will rise up and denounce the left for its stance, but whether that will happen tomorrow or fifty years from now is impossible to say.
