There was several important games today, but none were worth watching. In the Euro 2016 games, not a single one of the six teams involved looked prepared to go to the next round, even though three of them did. Poland beat Switzerland on penalty kicks - once again, penalty kicks become important for winning a game - even though they were thoroughly outplayed in the second half. (The one bright spot of this game was the goal scored off an overhead kick by Switzerland’s Shaqiri here.) Wales beat Northern Ireland, but they didn’t sparkle at all, and they never scored (one of their opponents accidently scored for them). Portugal managed to beat Croatia, though Croatia dominated the game and, until Portugal’s goal late in the game, had the better chances. I’m hoping for better games tomorrow, when the better teams will be playing. It’s just bad luck that most of the weaker teams that survived group play ended up playing each other rather than the stronger teams.
In addition to these games, the U.S. lost to Colombia 1-0 in the third-place game for the Copa America. I suppose it’s a moral victory since we were defeated by Colombia 2-0 in group play, so it’s a slightly better result.
