This should have been posted yesterday, but I was too depressed with the cold weather that I had to go out into in the evening to think about writing anything.
Anyway, imagine if the Jews had never picked up on the fact that the Holocaust had happened, or imagine if they had forgotten about it right away. Instead of being united in thinking of Hitler as the Jews’ worst-ever enemy, they had basically decided that Hitler was the natural reaction of Germans to the overly harsh conditions laid down by the Allies after World War I. Now imagine that a small number of Jews knew that he had been responsible for the murder of 6 million Jews. Imagine that these Jews try to persuade their fellow Jews of this fact, that Hitler was the Jews’ biggest enemy ever, only to meet stiff resistance. “Oh, but there was lots of killing going on at that time.” “Lots of people were anti-Semitic back then.” “But that would mean that lots of Germans were implicated in the killings, yet the Germans are very civilized.” “That’s just Germanophobia.” “What did the Jews do to provoke him?” Etc.
I say that there was a miniature Holocaust back in Iran in 1979, with leftists (and others) as victims and Muslims as perpetrators. It's also clear by now that the vast majority of leftists have no knowledge of this event. It is hard to believe that leftists are so ignorant of something of such importance to them, but apparently that is the case. It’s insane, but I don’t see that there’s anything one can do about it.
Now here’s another “imagine if” exercise, one that I want the Democrats to do. I think it should be clear by now that every election the Democrats have lost since 1968 they have lost for the same basic reason: the failure to keep poor whites happy. So here’s the exercise. Imagine that back in the 1960s, poor whites and poor blacks exchanged places. Never mind your insistence that this can’t be right since poor whites have white privilege which poor blacks lack. Most poor whites don’t feel privileged because of their economic situation, and anyway, poor blacks can count on affirmative action which is not available to poor whites.
My point is not to insist on this as a reality, but that Democrats should pretend that it’s true, and then act accordingly. At the very least, it means that talking disparagingly of poor whites is tantamount to using the n word on blacks. It just shouldn’t be done. But much more important is that it means they must make class issues more of a priority than class issues now are. That further means making other issues less of a priority, and those other issues are race, gender, sexual orientation, the environment, and so on. Will the Democrats do this? Of course not. There are too many Democrats (black activists, feminists, gay activists, and environmentalists, to list just four groups) who are now strongly invested in the idea that class issues don’t deserve a high priority. Change isn’t going to happen without a lot of complaining on their part. I tried to get through to them on this point after the disastrous 2004 election, and they didn’t listen. Nor will they listen now. And maybe this will work for them, because they did win in 2006 and 2008 and again in 2012. But they lost in 2010, 2014, and most disastrously, 2016, so their strategy hasn’t been a complete success. In fact, it’s now looking like a terrible failure.
Here, by the way, is an essay giving specific points that the Democrats should follow if they want to win in the future. Will they accept his advice? Probably not.
