1) There is one reason you could say Jane Austen didn't write "for the masses": in her day they didn't have a term "the masses" for people yet. They said things like "commoners" and "the common people."

2) It's Huffington Post. That they get something wrong because they have no idea of context doesn't surprise me a bit.
