I don't have a landline. I do have a cell phone, but it's not one of the fancy iPhone variety; it's a cheap phone with a pay-as-you-go plan. I hardly ever use the phone anyway. But there are alternatives to Google/Apple's Big Brotherism that don't mean having a phone attached to the wall.

There are reasons to have a landline, though. For example, for a dedicated fax line. Another is supposedly for in case the power goes out (make sure your land phone isn't an electric one); I will tell you though that my land line phone went out after Hurricane Charley passed through Orlando, where I was living at the time. It did come back on, but there are cases where land phones can be taken out just like cell phones (which won't work if a natural disaster damages the cell phone towers in the area).

We have plenty of power outages in this area, but our landline phone hasn't gone out once. Of course, we don't live in an area with hurricanes!

But you're right that one doesn't need the fancy sort of cell phone that gets spied on.
