Every now and then I read that employers don’t want to hire the unemployed, one of the reasons being that they aren’t up to date on their skills. Sorry, but this is wrong. During the period when I was unemployed and trying to get a job in Greek philosophy, I was more up to date on the literature than those who were employed because I had nothing else to do. They had to teach and serve on committees, but I could spend lots of time keeping up. I no longer keep up on the literature in Greek philosophy, but I’m then I’m not applying for jobs anymore, either.
Speaking of Greek philosophy, in a discussion of Shakespeare yesterday the question came up of how familiar his likely audience would be with the shrewish reputation of Socrates' wife, Xanthippe.
Can you point me to any evidence either way?

Interesting question. I'll answer it in a separate post tomorrow.
