Just as Washingtonians travelled to Manassas, and other local towns to watch the battles of the Civil War. The more things change and all that.

Read up on it. When the Southern forces broke through, it was panic time for the civilians.

Robert E. Lee could have capture many of Congress with a little more foresight.

That would have presented a difficult situation for Mr. Lincoln.

There is also the example of Pierre in Tolstoy's "War and Peace," who goes to watch the Battle of Borodino. That's fiction, of course, but Tolstoy may have known of actual examples.
