I say no, even if they are just engaged in training. See here. Here’s why:
1. It’s not our fight. Yes, it’s sad about the destroyed mausoleums and the unhappiness of many of the natives, but this is really a fight among Muslims, and since most of us aren’t Muslim, why should we care?
2. These aren’t our vital interests. Yes, it’s Al-Qaeda, but so what? If they take over Mali and train a bunch of terrorists, that still doesn’t mean they will be a threat to us, so long as we are vigilant about our own security. Mali is far away and unimportant. I’m much more worried about our own progressives, who are so busy empowering fundamentalist Muslims here, than about what happens in Mali.
3. As far as I know, there is no resource there that can’t be obtained from some other place.
4. It’s long past time that other countries deal with this problem. We’re in a recession, and we shouldn’t be spending money on minor problems in other parts of the world. Let France or Saudi Arabia deal with it.
5. The rest of the world needs to learn that they can’t both abuse us as imperialist thugs and expect us to rescue them when they get in trouble.
6. This is fallout from Obama’s intervention in Libya. Why make things worse? It’s a tarbaby. Anyway, if intervention is so necessary, then instead of using American troops, let Obama form a mercenary force composed of some of his gung-ho supporters. It will be good for them; they’ll actually have to learn how to use a gun.
Let me note that the anti-war crowd is already whining about this affair and blaming it on neo-cons, though as far as I can tell, the prime instigator of intervention is Francois Hollande, who is a socialist.
