Purely visually, the new map is more pleasing to the eye, with less clutter (more white space), and without the two-tone background of numbered (fare?) zones. It looks kind of like the Tokyo subway map (which is probably findable somewhere online). When I rode the Tokyo subway, I relied on the map, not realizing that walking aboveground was another alternative.

Lots of people think the old one is more pleasing to the eye and are fiercely devoted to it. I can see what they're saying, but I'd still like some resemblance to actual distances and directions.

By the way, the difference in design between them is that the old one uses 45 degree angled lines, while the new one uses 30 and 60 degrees.
