On Ask Reddit, someone asks foreigners about American foods that gross them out (here). Somewhere on the thread tater tot casserole came up (search for “meatloaf”), and I have to say that this was one of our big dishes at my home. Oddly enough, even though it’s associated with Minnesota, we didn’t know about it till my mom got the recipe from a co-worker, plus we called it “casserole” instead of the supposedly Minnesota-ism “hotdish.” I’ve introduced it to various people, both Minnesotans and non-Minnesotans, and most love it. However, my mom used cream of celery soup instead of cream of mushroom since, with two children who hated mushrooms (the only thing we could agree on), that just wasn’t going to work.
Recipes can be found easily enough, so I won’t give a link.
