Deism and Directed Evolution

The writer of this blog asks: “If one believes in or suspects the existence of God or gods, how does one exclude the possibility that He, She, or It meddles in the universe directing evolution, for example?” [Hat tip: Mark Spahn]

This isn’t a problem for me as a deist. Deism holds that God doesn’t intervene once the universe is created, so there would be no meddling by God with evolution. Anyway, God is perfect and so ought to be able to create a universe that can run on its own without any meddling, so that is a good reason for rejecting directed evolution. Also, directed evolution seems silly; it is making God into a committee. One God on this committee wants evolution, and another wants simple creation of everything without evolution (as described in Genesis), so they compromise with directed evolution. What is the point of God’s using evolution if it needs direction? Just use simple creation and be done with it.
