Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit speculates that the left abhors women with guns because of their fear of a woman with a mind of her own. See below:
I would suggest something different. Feminists want gender equality, and on issues like this, one might think they could go either way. It is men who usually own and use guns, and feminists could either encourage more women to do so, or discourage men from doing so. But since men are the problematic gender, feminists vastly prefer the latter choice. Accordingly, a woman who carries a gun is making the wrong choice.
I ran into this mentality years ago when telling a friend about a female co-worker who had put pictures of nude men on her cubicle wall. I thought it was pretty funny, but he thought differently. A poster child for the category of male feminist, he thought she was confused. Presumably his reasoning went as follows. What should feminists do about the objectification of women? One thing they could do is to objectify men as much as men objectify women, but what feminists vastly prefer to do is to condemn the practice of objectification (because men are the problem and so their practices must be a problem, too). Accordingly, this woman who was objectifying men had to be thought of as confused and not someone who had made a different choice in tactics.
