His name was Alois, and I’ve never known how to pronounce it. A look at this site suggests that maybe others don’t know how to pronounce it either, since one person pronounces it with two syllables, the last of which puts the two vowels together with the sound we make in boy or toy, and the others pronounce it with three syllables: a-loo-ees. Other sites aren’t any more helpful, so I still don’t know.
Interesting. How should one pronounce, in any language, Miss Lane's first name Lois? Let's ask Superman/Clark Kent. If "Lois" is pronounced with two syllables, the "i" should have an umlaut above it, not a dot. (cf. Noel)

Heh. I guess we (Americans, at least) just know from popular culture how Lois is pronounced. There are plenty of Irish names which I have no clue how to pronounce, though if I had grown up there, I would have known. I didn't know how to pronounce either Megan or Caitlin when I first encountered them (as an adult).
