People often say that diversity is a beneficial vale in its own right, but the evidence to support that assertion in its own right is remarkably thin. The only kind of diversity that seems provably to be beneficial is the one kind of diversity that universities seem to be least interested in fostering. I refer, of course, to diversity of thought, the argument for which was most famously made by John Stuart Mill in "On Liberty" and the evidence for which can be seen in the successes of the Scientific Method.
