This article details some big problems in the Edina school district. Edina is a suburb of Minneapolis, and its schools were considered the very best. I grew up in Minneapolis across the street from Edina, and it was pretty clear that my high school was inferior to the schools that Edina had. So, I think of this as good news! Just kidding, of course.
In spite of all the talk of how we need to “dismantle white privilege” and reject a “Eurocentric curriculum,” the fact remains that whites have done amazing things that everyone should be grateful for. Because of my wife’s cancer, we have been seeing medical people quite frequently over the past few months, and all of what we encounter is basically the result of white culture. It was whites in Europe who developed the scientific method and the technology that has led to what we experience. New techniques are being developed constantly, and mostly it is whites who are doing this, and everyone who is doing it is doing it as a result of what certain Europeans said and did a few hundred years ago. If they hadn’t done those things, there is no reason to believe that medical science would have developed as much as it has.
Even in the last ten years vast changes have occurred. Our talks with people who went through chemotherapy in those years reveal that they had it much worse than do cancer patients today. This is all to the good, and anyone who wants to despise white culture is also despising what whites have accomplished. Get rid of the culture that whites promoted, and lots of people will suffer greatly as a result.
Incidentally, how is it that the people who were the most radical back when I was in college have taken over our schools? The most radical, the ones who hated America the most, were in the minority compared with others who were somewhat radical, but had otherwise reasonable views. How did this minority manage to do it?
Anyway, what is pathetic about this policy in the Edina schools is that it was implemented to help improve the grades of minorities (who didn’t live there when I was young), and it hasn’t helped them at all. It’s been a complete waste.
