While I expected it would be leftists who would lay down a challenge to the rise of the Islamic right (which I talked about here), in fact it is Saudi Arabia that is laying down such a challenge. Saudi Arabia was modernizing until 1979, when it went into reverse because of challenges from both ultra-conservative Sunnis and Shi’ites. See here. While I am expecting the architect of the changes currently being made, Mohammed bin Salman, to be assassinated, I am still hoping for the best.
