I'm reminded that Hitler wrote that the easiest people to recruit into the Nazi Party were Communists. And Mussolini began as one. His justice minister, Alfredo Rocco, wrote how Fascism was a sort of evolutionary step from Communism.

As Eric Hoffer pointed out, they are all birds of a feather, "true believers."

Yes, I was pretty surprised when I found out, after I had already drifted away from the left, that Mussolini had started out as a leftist.
