Some thoughts on recent events in my hometown:
• I’m sure everyone has heard by now that some of the same city council members who want to abolish the police have managed to get private security to help protect them and that this was done at the city’s expense. They claimed that they were being threatened by white supremacists; however, they haven’t gone to the police about this. Naturally, the idea that there are some who can’t afford private security seems not to have occurred to them.
• I know of at least two Minneapolis progressives who are convinced that their city's troubles are due to white supremacists (and they are the only ones I’ve heard from, so that’s two out of two). Exactly why anyone would believe this is unclear. What evidence is there for it? None has been provided, as far as I know.
• One of these progressives works for an arts foundation, and she believes it is infused with systemic racism. Almost certainly the foundation employs nobody but progressives, so how can there be any systemic racism within it? Wow, those white supremacists sure are powerful! They can control an organization without being any part of it.
Of course, this talk of systemic racism is nothing but a dodge to explain why there are still problems for blacks, even though progressives are mostly in control. This is nothing other than the usual practice of leftists of blaming someone else for their own problems.
• As far as I know, not a single progressive has explained how a city controlled by progressives had an incident like the killing of George Floyd. Who in particular, aside from the police officer at the scene, was to blame? The mayor? The chief of police? The district attorney? Someone on the city council? It is ridiculous to look further since these are the people who had responsibility for controlling the police. Blaming it on systemic racism doesn’t count; one might as well blame gremlins. Likewise, blaming it on Trump is ridiculous. He is not that powerful.
• The essay by the black politician Kendall Qualls, which can be found here, should be required reading for every progressive. Of course, they won’t pay any attention to it. Here’s an excerpt:
When I was in high school, I remember big city politicians and urban elites calling America racist because Black-Americans struggled in the inner cities. Not much has changed. Black-Americans still struggle, the same urban elites dominate the conversation, and yet they present no fundamental plan for change. Empty platitudes and a reading list for white people won’t solve the struggles in the Black community.
Yup. That’s exactly what I’m saying. These urban elites have changed nothing. In fact, I go further and insist that they are fighting to keep blacks at the bottom so they can remain in power by crying “racism” at every turn. And since they can’t find an actual racist in the George Floyd death, they are calling it “systemic” racism.
Let me repeat that nothing will change for blacks at the bottom with all the changes our elites want. Nothing.
