There’s likely something to this. The original technique of attacking people with differing ideas by demonizing them instead of trying to refute them was formalized by various marxists such as Soviet communists, Herbert Marcuse, and Saul Alinsky. A problem with this strategy is that practitioners lose the ability to make arguments. Another problem is that some of them start believing their own nonsense, hence hysterical people who think having Trump as president is just like living in Nazi Germany. In short, the left has inadvertently dumbed itself down and driven itself crazy.

Incidentally, this strategy was invented by Marx himself, who insisted proletarian consciousness was different from bourgeois consciousness, and thus he didn’t have to refute his critics, whose ideas were simply labeled wrong by nature of who the critics were.
