It's because the left does not understand conservatives, nor do they wish to. Instead they create endless strawmen in their own minds and hate these. The data support this conclusion.

Jonathan Haidt's experiments ask liberals and conservatives to fill out questionnaires about their values, then to predict how someone from the opposite tribe would fill out the questionnaire. He finds that conservatives are able to predict liberals' answers just fine and seem to have a pretty good understanding of their worldviews, but that liberals have *no idea* how conservatives think or what they value.

When faced with questions such as "One of the worst things a person could do is hurt a defenseless animal" or "Justice is the most important requirement for a society," liberals assumed that conservatives would disagree.

Thanks for reminding me of Haidt's study. Let me also point out that lots of times, leftists aren't always aware of developments within leftism itself. Environmentalists who think of science-deniers as being on the right are unaware of science-deniers on the left, and those who focus mostly on class issues may be unaware of how extreme those in identity politics have become.

Defending multi-billion dollar hedge funds bc they aren’t TBTF and therefore need to be protected by other billionaires, who do so by violating contracts and changing rules midstream to screw small investors? Wow, great. The left has really done itself proud, hasn’t it.
