If you’re a citizen of the world, and you meet another citizen of the world, but one who is from another country, what do you talk about? Presumably, you talk about world affairs. You would talk about the economy, trouble spots, and these days the virus. What you wouldn’t do would be to talk about topics that the other person probably wouldn’t be interested in. This includes topics that only your fellow nationals would find interesting. For example, asking someone who isn’t American what they plan to do for Thanksgiving shows a contemptible ignorance of the rest of the world. And you wouldn’t talk about new churches in America to a Saudi because you would presume that they as a Muslim would not be interested in it or might even see such a topic as a veiled threat. And you wouldn’t talk about the great steak you had last night to a Hindu. Maybe if you had something in common that other people do not, you could talk about that, such as issues with the Catholic Church if you are both Catholic.
So, if you are Joe Biden, who is Catholic, and you are meeting with the Pope, who is Catholic, talking about the Catholic Church makes sense. What does not make sense is what happened: Joe Biden decided to talk with the Pope about baseball. The current Pope is from Argentina, where soccer is king, so talking about baseball with him just shows the usual American arrogance about our sports that one expects liberals and leftists to have overcome. And why haven’t they overcome it? It’s because despite thinking of themselves as citizens of the world, they never look at foreign newspapers. Yes, at a time when it’s easier than ever to look at foreign newspapers, they cling to the NY Times and the Washington Post. They don’t even look at Britain’s Guardian.
