This article talks about the absurd lengths that U.S. soccer officials have to go to to ensure that games between the U.S. and Mexico have mostly Americans rather than Mexicans in the stands. This involves figuring out which part of the country has the fewest Mexicans and also having very tight control over who gets tickets. Of the four World Cup qualifying games between the two countries that were held in Columbus, I went to two of them. The first one had the added advantage that the temperature at game time was a mere 25 degrees, which gave a big advantage to Americans who have lived with such temperatures over Mexicans who haven’t. It worked, because the U.S. won 2-0. Tonight, there is a game between the two countries in Cincinnati. Ohio, it seems, is the best place to play if you don’t want a lot of Mexicans dominating the stands.
The article adds that the Mexican team plays three times as many games in America (mostly in LA, I think) as it does in Mexico just because they can count on lots of Mexicans coming out to the games. Sheesh. The only thing comparable I’ve heard in other countries was an exhibition game in France a number of years ago between France and Morocco that had more people cheering for Morocco – they were immigrants, of course – than for France.
As for how I feel about tonight’s game in Cincinnati, the U.S. team has gotten too woke for me to care anymore.
