See here. There are now some leftists who see nuclear power as a viable alternative to fossil fuels, as opposed to the solar and wind power they have been preferring for years. I’m assuming that much of the change has come from the failure of alternative energy in recent weeks, as the wind in Europe isn’t very strong and cloudy days have meant less energy from solar as well. So, they are in dire need of gas from Russia, which may be inclined to stir things up in its favor – look out, Ukraine! – because of all this. But no matter what the purists among the environmentalists think, who wouldn’t rethink all of this if they were in that situation?
But it’s too bad that the left ever was against nuclear power. What this has meant over the last fifty years is that government research money has flowed into other channels, so we are not as advanced in this area as we might have been. Like I said, Too bad.
One last point: Why is Germany still hostile to nuclear power? They became fervently against it after what happened in Japan in 2011. That’s right, an earthquake and tsunami in an earthquake-prone part of the world caused a problem for a nuclear reactor, so Germany, which seldom has earthquakes, decided that they were sooooo dangerous that they must be avoided everywhere. Germany used to have a reputation for sound, scientific judgments, but really, who can take them seriously now?
