While growing up, I managed to collect a large number of odd facts, a lot of them science related. One of them was that there was a fish called the coelacanth that had been thought to be extinct, but in 1938 some fisherman had caught one. I haven’t thought much about coelacanths in ages, but I learned the other day that the country of Comoros (some islands near Madagascar) is using it as the name of their national team. See here. Not many teams opt for sea animals, and if they do, they choose sharks or stingrays or something dangerous. I don’t think coelacanths are dangerous, though I guess they are an endangered species. But the height of absurdity would be Evergreen State’s choice: geoducks. They are a sort of clam, not a duck, and the first part of the word is pronounced “gooey.” Yup, just right for a place like that.
