It’s a strange truth about downward spirals that those in control while they are happening have no idea what’s going on. They just keep doing what they are doing in the belief that they are making things “better.” Or if they do have a glimmer of what’s going on, if they do somehow perceive that things are going downhill fast, they blame it on their political opponents, even though they and not their political opponents are the ones with power.
Minneapolis exemplifies this pattern. Not content with having destroyed Minneapolis’s reputation as a pleasant and hip liberal city, Antifa decided to have yet another spree of destruction. See here. (At first when I read this, I wondered if it was somehow a report from 2020 that was accidentally being recycled. Sadly, no.) The police were nowhere, though I’m sure they’d show up fast if anyone were to try to defend themselves against the mob.
The powers-that-be in the city seem incapable of figuring out that Antifa needs to be kept in check, and so they allowed more destruction to happen. In addition, a letter to the editor of the Wall Street Journal the other day blamed the whole thing on Trump. Sheesh.
On the plus side – and yes, I’m being slightly sarcastic here – it’s a great boon for the environmentalists. Having people move out of a city (because that will be the end result) that is too big, given its environmental requirements, is progress. It’s true that environmentalists never seem to think along these lines. When they think about where people live, they get angry only at those who live in suburbs, but why not also at people who live in ridiculously cold or hot places? It takes a lot of energy to keep Minneapolitans warm in the winter (and cool in the summer, though that’s a lesser problem), so people should be discouraged from living there. Minneapolis should be nothing but a small city serving nearby farmers. It should be about the size of, say, Mankato or Bismark, North Dakota.
Antifa is inadvertently encouraging what environmentalists should have encouraged Minneapolitans to do ages ago: move out. Move to someplace that has lesser weather extremes so you won’t use as much energy. Heh.

This seems to apply well to Trudeau's Canada.

Turmoil and destruction are useful for those who want to be dictators. Get enough people upset with the chaos and then promise them calm and security in exchange for their freedom.
